TODAY'S edition of The National made newspaper history by publishing the McCrone Report in full.
It comes 45 years after then prime minister Ted Heath and his Conservative government received the report which contained information about the astonishing wealth of Scotland's oil. The dossier was then hushed for decades in an attempt to quell support for independence.
We presented a fresh analysis of the report by Professor Gavin McCrone and tell the story of how successive UK Governments kept it under wraps.
The McCrone Report might well have changed the course of Scottish political history, which led to it trending on Twitter.
Here's the top tweets from the Yes movement:

#Britnats tell us that we should stay part of the #UK because we have a shared 300 year history, but the minute you mention the #McCroneReport they say it was 45 years ago and it’s history, so we should forget it. That’s unionist logic for you. 🙄#IndyRef2 #DissolveTheUnion

I’ve just spent the day reading the #McCroneReport
— Davey (@TopRopeDavey) 27 February 2019
If ever there was an argument for Scottish Independence it is this: The UK Government went to extreme lengths to conceal Scotland’s wealth for nearly 30 years over oil. It’s clear that they don’t act in her interests #IndyRef2

I read the #McCroneReport and weep, tears for my Dad (died 2011) a life long SNPer I weep coz I watched him a proud man desperate for work in 70s, watched my mum struggle to feed & clothe us, we queued for our free school meals we slept wrapped in blankets couldn’t afford heating pic.twitter.com/lDz5FucXlD

For decades Westminster have suppressed and oppressed Scotland in many ways. The #McCroneReport is just one example.

Read @ScotNational article to understand just what ends successive Westminster Governments (Tory & Labour) have gone to- to suppress Scotland and her voice. https://t.co/qp5vG6oK20

My gawd!! No wonder this report has been sat on for over 30 plus years .. I'm utterly disgusted by the tactics of governments over the years towards Scotland. #McCroneReport

This made me a Yes in 2014. It may not have been intended to be published but the messages coming out in 2014 about Scotland not surviving without the broad shoulders of the UK couldn’t have been more different from what’s reported here. We were robbed and lied to #McCroneReport https://t.co/S0Rjqq1TlR

God knows what #McCroneReport he has been reading but when I read it, I at no point gathered that it was informing me that independence was bad for Scots.
— Jamie "MacAlba" (@BlogAlba) 27 February 2019
In fact it told me that staying in the UK was bad for Scots.
Unionism glasses really do hide the truth! https://t.co/KJmZahkfi9

Just read the #McCronereport publushed in today's @ScotNational. This, to me, is the most significant paragraph.
— W G Saraband 🏴🇵🇹 (@wgsaraband) 27 February 2019
Scotland has been robbed of a better present by the UK establishment. It is time we say 'enough', and take charge of our future.#indyref2 #independence #Scotland pic.twitter.com/B5ZQWqM6yE

The #McCronereport also shows that the UK establishment was well aware of many of the problems facing Scotland, and despite the huge potential of North Sea oil to help tackle them, little was done. The money went elsewhere, before Maggie Thatcher dealt Scotland a kiss of death.

The extent of collusion the British government will go to to maintain it's grip on Scotland. Doesn't make for happy reading #McCroneReport https://t.co/JRnaqhNlxH

As the #McCroneReport makes clear, it really should have been Scotland's climate change, Scotland's mass extinction, Scotland's slow societal erosion!

I just don’t understand why any Scot can support UK unionism. There’s no logic to being robbed blind of our resources, al a #McCronereport having nuclear waste & rotting missiles dumped here. No point in another country controlling our economy by holding it back. 1of many.

Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
