LAST night we brought you the major news that we would be making Scottish newspaper history on Wednesday by publishing the McCrone Report in full.
READ MORE:Â The National to make newspaper history by publishing McCrone Report in full
It comes 45 years after then prime minister Ted Heath and his Conservative government received the report which contained information about the astonishing wealth of Scotland's oil. The dossier was then hushed for decades in an attempt to quell support for independence.
Tomorrow, The National will present a fresh analysis of the report by Professor Gavin McCrone and tell the story of how successive UK Governments kept it under wraps.
Last night when we first tweeted this, and on our reminders throughout the day, it's pretty clear that Unionists aren't happy about it. We must be doing something right!
Here's a flavour of what they were saying:

Don't know what your purpose is, but there is nothing in McCrone Report that isn't available in the public domain

Making history by doing something no one else actually cares about doing. And I thought your obsession with Orange Jacket Man was long running!

More lies from the utterly dishonest National. McCrone report was never intended for publication. It was an internal report, compiled from information already available in the public domain.

You really are getting desperate to create grievance and division
12.Â
Oh dear why are you lying?

"astonishing"?... What's astonishing is the utter rubbish your comic continually professes and even more astonishing is the way your moronic readers lap it up 🤣🤣

If your going to sell independence then whos interested in a 45 year old report. What is the lie of the land now...let's see a new mcrone report from an independent source, and get the currency sorted...that's how to get people on board.

Just as well and independent Scotland would have to pick up the bill for decommissioning and removing all the oil rigs another reason why independence would be self-destructive make Scotland poorer

We've got them rattled. Don't forget to pick up a couple of copies of tomorrow's paper.
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
Callum Baird, Editor of The National
