THE new BBC Scotland channel launched tonight with a star-studded line-up of music, comedy, dance and more.
Chvrches kicked off the proceedings with an orchestral rendition of their song Miracle, followed by the debut episodes of A Night At The Theatre andΒ Getting Hitched Asian Style.
Later, the first episode in the last series of Still Game is due to air, as well as a one-off special of sketch show Burnistoun.
But opinions on the channel's first set of offerings were divided - and nowhere was this clearer than on Twitter.

The question will now be can anything the new BBC Scotland channel produce ever top an ORCHESTRAL VERSION OF CHVRCHESβ MIRACLE. The bar has been well and truly set.

Excellent introduction to the new @BBCScotland channel with @CHVRCHES. Best of luck to everyone involved, particularly those at @BBCScotNine - itβs in all our interests for this new venture to succeed.

Yes, I do plan to watch this obsessively all night while being unreasonably hyper critical about it. It's the Scottish way. #BBCScotland

Well, I lasted 10 minutes. - "oh look, it's from Theatre Royal", then switched over to #AntiquesRoadshow. We can do better than this guys. #ANATT @BBCScotland @GlasgowKings

Condescending, embarrassing and dated beyond belief. Disappointed, but not surprised. So much genuine talent in Scotland and we get...THIS #BBCScotland

Pretty much sums up our household too - utterly awful way to introduce a new channel which claims to be 'feisty' and all about 'contemporary' #Scotland - simply horrendous. Let's see - tomorrow - if the @BBCScotNine can serve up a decent 'news' exclusive π #BBCScotland https://t.co/C2NS6bMjsk

So proud of my country, and loving the fact that the first full programme on the brand new #BBCScotland is a million miles away from shortbread and haggis. #GettingHitchedAsianStyle

After a fantastic performance by @CHVRCHES on the new #BBCScotland we got half an hour of stereotypical, lazy, shite Scottish 'comedy'. Thankfully the next show, Getting Hitched Asian Style, is far more like it: great way of showing how Asian Scots merge their cultures.

My 7 year old son is fascinated with the #GettingHitchedAsianStyle programme on the new @BBCScotland channel and is firing all sorts of inquisitive questions at me. So Iβm chalking that down as a big success for the first programme. #GHAS

Screened in Portree a few weeks back. Nary a dry eye in the audience. Watch this and give the BBC audience figures a fright.

A mixed reaction, then, to the first night. We'll be watching with interest...
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. Weβve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who arenβt really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So thatβs why weβve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate β and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about β people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Letβs get that debate started!
Callum Baird, Editor of The National
