A TRIAL was launched yesterday of a reverse vending machine scheme for empty drinks containers.

Customers at three convenience stores will receive 10p back for each can or plastic bottle they return over the next three months. The shops taking part are Nisa Local and Post Office on North Road in Bellshill, Premier Broadway in Oxgangs in Edinburgh, and Keystore in Moredun in the capital.

The stores are offering customers the option to donate their 10p to the local community.

Premier Broadway will match their customers’ donations to Pentlands Primary School, Nisa Local and Post Office Bellshill will give people the chance to support St Andrew’s Hospice in Airdrie, and Keystore in Moredun has chosen the Goodtrees Neighbourhood Centre.

Local councillor Harry Curran, MSP Richard Lyle and MP Hugh Gaffney and visited the Bellshill store for the launch. They are pictured with owner Abdul Majid.
