POLICE were called to a protest this afternoon in Newport.

More than 100 activists engaged in a protest outside the Kurdish Community Centre, in Chepstow Road, to demand the release of Abdullah Öcalan, leader of the Kurdistan Workers' Party, who has been arrested.

Activists claim Turkish authorities have violated Mr Öcalan's human rights.

Activist Imam Sis, who went on hunger strike last month, thanked people for attending the protest.

He has so far lost 14 kilos.

He said: "We are all here to demand for Abdullah Öcalan be released from prison.
"He is being denied basic human rights.

"He is a fantastic leader.
"I will remain on hunger strike until he is released. I have so far lost 14 kilos."

Chief inspector Sarah Davies, of Gwent Police, said:

“At approximately midday, we were made aware of a significant number of protesters making their way toward Maindee Square, along Chepstow Road.

“Officers attended to facilitate a peaceful protest, and manage traffic in the area.

“Minor disorder was reported at the scene, involving a small number of protestors at a police cordon. However, no injuries were reported and no arrests were made.

“The protest was dispersed by approximately 1.15pm.”

The protest caused some traffic delays in Newport.
