Great British Car Journeys, C4, 8pm
INVERNESS and Skye are on the map when All Creatures Great and Small co-stars Christopher Timothy and Peter Davison revisit the golden age of motoring, taking a classic 1930s car along some of Britain’s vintage roads, drawing inspiration from travel guides of the era.
Their first journey takes north, following single-track military roads created to control the Highlands. Along the way, they take a spin in a 1903 Dog Cart and a three-wheel rally car, and cross to Skye in the oldest car ferry of its kind.
Safe Harbour, BBC4, 9pm
THE latest slice of world drama is this cracker from down under. It centres on five friends sailing from Brisbane to Indonesia.
They go to the assistance of a group of asylum seekers on a broken-down boat – a decision that has life-changing repercussions. The cast includes Ewen Leslie, Leeanna Walsman, Joel Jackson, Phoebe Tonkin and Jacqueline McKenzie.
In the second episode which follows, Ismail reports the crime at sea to the Australian federal police but secrets start to surface and he turns his attentions closer to home.
Secrets of the Royal Servants, C5, 9pm
EVER wondered what goes on behind the scenes at places like Buckingham Palace, St James’s Palace, Windsor Castle, Sandringham House and Balmoral?
This light-hearted documentary takes a peek behind the curtains at those famous royal residences, as the household’s staff share amusing stories from their time working for the most famous family in the world.
A cook reveals the Queen’s surprisingly simple favourite treat, while a footman of the Queen Mother recounts his most embarrassing gaffe, which involves wine and Princess Margaret. Plus, historian Kate Williams examines some of the most bizarre servant duties from history.
Mayans MC, BBC2, 10.40pm
SONS of Anarchy was one of the biggest dramas of recent years, and though it didn’t get a screening on the BBC, this spin-off fares better.
It follows rivals turned allies the Mayans Motorcycle Club and boasts a fine cast including JD Pardo, Clayton Cardenas and Blade Runner veteran Edward James Olmos. The first episode features vengeful ex-con Ezekiel “EZ” Reyes.
He steps up to claim his new identity as an outlaw in the biking community of Santo Padre. Joining his brother’s club, it soon becomes apparent he is going to have to earn his place as his new team deal with a crooked police force and a drug cartel.
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
Callum Baird, Editor of The National
