1 The women of Red Clydeside and the rent strikes. 6pm at the Mitchell Library, January 31. As always, women have been largely edited out of their important role in Red Clydeside. Dr Valerie Wright considers the political activism of these important women. Though cowards flinch and traitors sneer, we’ll keep the red flag flying here.
2 Celtic Connections: Carole King, Tapestry. Mitchell Theatre, Glasgow, January 29. This beginning-to-end performance of King’s classic album follows a similar sell-out show last year which featured Joni Mitchell’s Court And Spark album. This show takes itself to Summerhall on February 2 at 7.30pm, tickets available at www.musicglue.com, and get your Gilmore Girls on. I better get tickets to this or I will cry.

4 An Evening with Shaun & Bez at Fat Sams, February 1, 7pm till 3am. Tickets from £16, or £32 for a meet & greet. Party the night away with guys who blazed the trail for 24-hour party people. Rock’n’roll legend, reality TV star, former drug-dealer, poet, film star, former heroin addict, son, brother, father, husband, foul-mouthed anthropologist and straight-talking survivor, Happy Mondays’ Shaun Ryder has been a cultural icon for a quarter of a century. Do not miss this chance to hear all his chat – bring the maracas for Bez, reportedly in talks to appear in Strictly. I want to go to this. Hint hint to my significant other.
5 Spaced-themed roller disco, Aberdeen Leisure Centre, February 2, 3-5pm. Family friendly ticket for the whole gang for a measly 20 of your earth pounds. Scrunchies are back and 80s music never went away, so it was only a matter of time before the roller disco returned. Yaldi! Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
Callum Baird, Editor of The National
