THE skulls of two indigenous tribe leaders are to be returned to Canada, after spending nearly a century in the National Museum

of Scotland.

Tribe chief Nonosabasut and his wife Demasduit were the last remaining members of the Beothuk tribe in Newfoundland when they died in the 19th century.

A repatriation request was made in July after campaigners visited Edinburgh to meet officials and see the skulls. Museum director

Dr Gordon Rintoul said: “After careful consideration in line with our human remains in collections policy, the board approved the request.

“We sought and have now received the required approval from the Scottish Government.”
