A SCOTTISH Scout group is set to play a unique part in safeguarding the future of golden eagles in the UK.

Working with the groundbreaking South of Scotland Golden Eagle Project, the Scottish Borders Scouts Innerleithen Scout Group is launching the country’s first Golden Eagle Champions initiative. Group members will learn about golden eagles from experts and get to see some of the iconic birds. They will also design a special badge that the group can earn as part of their work on this project.

The project aims to prevent the loss of the small golden eagle population in the Borders and Dumfries and Galloway by introducing chicks from the Highlands. Five custom-built aviaries have been sited at a confidential location where the young birds will spend two months before being released into the Moffat Hills.

Chris Kennedy, who leads Innerleithen Scout Group, said: "This is a fantastic opportunity for our Scouts to take a hands-on approach and work with other people across our community as well as some of the country’s leading wildlife and raptor experts on such a hugely important issue.

“The young people involved really will get a chance to impact on our natural heritage for generations to come.”
