The National:

SNP MP Joanna Cherry QC has been on fire over the past few days, leading the charge against the UK Government's Brexit – and making clear Scotland has another option.

Tory MSP Murdo Fraser is her latest victim, after he made a ridiculous tweet about a poll on a second independence referendum.

The Herald had reported the results of research it had conducted. Its poll found that a majority believe Scotland should hold indyref2 if Brexit takes place.

In fact, 57% of those polled believed this should be the case, compared to just 40% who said there should be no fresh vote.

Cherry tweeted: "Excellent news. An exclusive new poll has revealed a majority believe Scotland should have #Indyref2 if #Brexit goes ahead. More than 56%. The clock is ticking down to a very important announcement from ⁦@theSNP⁩ #BringItOn"

That annoyed arch-Unionist Fraser, who felt compelled to hit back, writing: "Oh dear, ‘leading’ SNP MP tries to spin an unscientific reader panel survey as representative of Scottish public opinion. Just shows how out of touch they are."

Now, it must be said, the Herald isn't exactly known for having a pro-independence stance. Murdo should probably keep that in mind when treating it with such scepticism.

He'll be wishing he'd stayed quiet though, because Cherry's response was perfect.

She responded: "Perhaps if Murdo Fraser in his long political career had ever managed to win a seat and had constituents with whom to speak & correspond he would appreciate that this poll is representative of public opinion #Brexit #indyref2"

Does Murdo really find it so incredible that there would be growing support for indyref2? After all, it was the Better Together campaign he backed which made such a big deal of the Union being key to Scotland staying in the European Union.

Now, it's becoming increasingly clear that independence will be the only way for Scotland to protect its place in Europe.

The momentum is clearly with one side, and that side has a Yes movement busy preparing.
