A BOTTLE of Buckfast dating back to before the second World War has been discovered in a Glasgow attic - and it's selling on eBay for almost £800.

Jonathan Porter was clearing out his parent's house when he made the discovery in the the loft.

Buckfast makers J Chandler and Co have confirmed that the bottle was made before 1936, meaning that it's over 80 years old and probably shouldn't be drunk.

Speaking to STV News, Porter said: "My grandparents owned an off -licence on Duke Street in Glasgow before the Second World War.

"While I was helping my dad to tidy up his attic I found a box with lots of things from the shop in it, this bottle included.

"At first I had no idea what it was because it was so dusty.

"It wasn't until I contacted the makers of Buckfast that I realised how old it was."

The label of the unopened bottle claims that the tonic wine inside is "a great cure for depression, insomnia and pregnancy pains".

Interestingly, it's possible to establish if a bottle of Buckfast was made before or after the war by looking at the address on the label.

Responding in a letter to Jonathan, J Chandler and Co said: "If the address on the label is Parliament Square then the bottle was produced before 1936.

"If the address is out Fulham office then it was produced after 1936.

"This is the date the company relocated as the government at the time requisitioned our office in Whitehall for the War Offices.

"It's difficult to date it more accurately than that as the label and bottle changed very little over a long period of time."

Porter has said that the response to the listing on eBay has been "unbelievable". At the time of writing, it had reached almost £800, with 49 bids and 3 days to go.
