A SAUDI woman who was stopped in Thailand after attempting to flee her family has arrived in Canada where she has been granted asylum.

Rahaf Mohammed Alqunun, 18, had flown to Bangkok to escape her family – who she claims abused her – and was stopped on January 5 by immigration police who denied her entry and seized her passport.

Alqunun then barricaded herself in an airport hotel to avoid deportation, saying she feared for her life, and grabbed global attention by launching a social media campaign for asylum.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau confirmed asylum was granted and said: “That is something that we are pleased to do because Canada is a country that understands how important it is to stand up for human rights and to stand up for woman’s rights around the world and I can confirm that we have accepted the UN’s request.”

The teen smiled with the country’s foreign minister upon arriving.
