The National:

THE UK Government is being accused of creating a "xenophobic environment" for immigrants.

Their hostile approach to immigration is nothing new, and it's not something Theresa May makes any great attempt to conceal. Courtesy of Michael Gove, however, we've found out one part of free movement the Tories do care about.

The answer? The free movement of horses. Gove has suggested this year's Grand National could suffer if there is a no-deal Brexit.

The Environment Secretary described the "very important point" that the free movement of horses "would be harmed" if MPs do not back May's deal next week.

That's sure to win the PM the many, many votes she'll need to get her deal passed...

Gove's remarks came when he was pressed on whether Irish horses would be able to take part in the April event if the UK leaves without an agreement on March 29.

Labour's John Mann told the Commons: "My very savvy constituents do like to participate in the biggest horse race event of the year, the Grand National on April 6.

"Being savvy, large numbers of them do tend to bet on Irish horses.

"With a no-deal, can they be certain that Irish horses will get to the Grand National or not?"

Gove replied: "Well, you make a very important point.

"In the event of no deal, the tripartite agreement, which is part of EU law, falls – and of course the bloodstock industry, the horse racing industry and others can take mitigating steps.

"But it is the case that the current free movement of equines would be harmed but would be protected by this deal."

We don't mean to say this isn't an issue. The fact that even the Grand National could be hit by Brexit just goes to highlight the terrifyingly broad impact a no-deal will have.

We just wish they could be as open about how disastrous their Brexit approach will be for humans.

We won't hold our breath...
