ROBERT the Bruce could be returning to TV screens around the world, according to a Netflix insider.

Following the spectacular success of Outlaw King starring Chris Pine, executives are now considering a major spin-off series.

The Netflix hit told the story of Robert the Bruce and his fight for the crown of Scotland against English occupiers.

According to a Netflix insider, the new four or five-part series could begin during the time of William Wallace, with filming starting as early as next year.

The insider said: “It would start from the reign of William Wallace and lead into Robert the Bruce and the Battle of Bannockburn.

“This is the road Netflix want to go down following the success of Outlaw King.

“It’s not a million miles away from the themes of Game of Thrones. Viewers just seem to have a massive appetite for these sorts of dramas at the moment.

“The title is yet to be confirmed but The Outlaw Robert is being looked at.”

Oscar-nominated David Mackenzie directed Outlaw King, with Star Trek actor Chris Pine leading the movie as Robert the Bruce.

Scottish producer Gillian Berrie, who convinced financiers that Pine could pull off the accent, said that the story went some way to fixing misconceptions left behind after Mel Gibson's Braveheart.

While Netflix do not release viewing figures, Berrie has since confirmed that Netflix were very happy with how the film was received, prompting executives to consider the new series.

She said: “I’ve been told it’s been No1 in just about every territory that it has been released.

“That’s 193 countries and they have 120million subscribers.

“It’s done well in territories where films such as this don’t normally have any traction, so it has gone incredibly well.”
