WE are always delighted to announce positive Yes developments, so thanks to Yes Strathaven secretary Alan Calder for this heartening message.
He wrote: “It is with the greatest of pleasure that we inform you of the opening of the latest Yes Hub.
“Yes Strathaven re-convened and held our inaugural meeting during May this year, after which, in addition to holding street stalls and leaflet drops, we spent many months preparing to open our own hub and drop-in centre.
“Recently we were successful in acquiring excellent premises in a central location which we aim to have open seven days a week. Setting up the Hub was assisted by much appreciated financial support from the Scottish Independence Foundation, with ongoing operations entirely community funded and manned by volunteers.
“We intend to raise the profile of independence and help to convince previous No voters and undecideds by offering a friendly space in which to have a coffee, to read the paper – The National, obviously – or to discuss Brexit, politics or just chat about local issues or even the weather.
“Our highly visible premises, whilst being non-party political, will provide information not readily available in the mainstream media. We are non politicians delivering the simple message that Scotland’s future is best decided by those who live and work here. We hope to become a well-known feature in the town and to work within the community to help achieve independence.”
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
Callum Baird, Editor of The National
