THE latest group to help The National boost awareness of the only Scots newspaper to support independence was Yes Monifieth, which distributed 1000 free copies on Saturday.
The group has given us a report of its 2018 activities, so thanks to Jean Lee for the information.
She told the Yes DIY Hub: “We meet once a month in a local pub and there’s a core group of stalwarts and others dip in and out of meetings as they can.
“The strength of the team was shown on Saturday, distributing 1000 copies of The National in the freezing cold before mid-day. A superb effort!
“Weather permitting we hold a monthly #bridgesforindy event on the A92 Carnoustie flyover and the buzz from these events is amazing. Motorists have become much more responsive over time – are they just getting the hang of it as we have two big ‘Toot for Indy’ banners now - or is it the growing confidence that we sense everywhere?
“We’ve even had some bringing their own flags to wave back at us. Not sure what the highlight would be but we did get a noisy response from a hearse one day, and then there was the ambulance driver who gave us the whole siren treatment. Great fun.
“Advertising these sessions on the Noticeboard and contacting other local groups to get them to come along now means that we have spawned three other #bridgesforindy groups across Angus. Try it. It works.
“Our persistence is paying off with local farmers stopping to chat and telling us that our commitment impresses them and they feel ours is a positive consistent message amongst all the Brexit chaos.
“Most months we also hold at least one street stall in the High Street with badges, leaflets etc and recently we have focused on specific issues. For a few weeks it was the parsimony of UK pensions and we backed it up with messaged t-shirts and pension comparison leaflets. BBC bias got similar treatment.
“Our Brexitometers also work well and engage people. We’ve been at all the indy marches this year, and taking part in our local Dundee one was very special. Back in March some of us joined in the HOOP demo round Holyrood – a wonderful show of determined strength which may need repeating.
“And in September we were humbled to be involved with the wonderful 500-miles walkers who shared lunch with us in Tealing. Utterly inspiring.
“We work and share ideas with Yes groups across Angus, and wider through Facebook, and are always struck by how many really positive and decent people we meet. The people are the Yes movement’s strength and we have an amazingly talented and lovely bunch in Monifieth, and right across Scotland. We’re ready.”
