AN SNP MP has called for a no-confidence motion in the Labour Party for the "mess" they made of calling a no-confidence vote in the UK Government.

Angus MacNeil made the call during a Commons debate as Theresa May met with her Cabinet to ramp up preparations for leaving the EU without a deal.

Jeremy Corbyn called for a no-confidence motion in the Prime Minister and not the Government, prompting some to label the opposition leader's move as a "shoddy stunt".

Today in the Commons, MacNeil asked: "Is it possible for a backbench MP to table a motion of no confidence in Her Majesty's opposition given the mess they have made of tabling a motion of no confidence, confusing even their own backbenchers between a motion of no confidence in the Prime Minister and the Government?"

Speaker of the House John Bercow replied: "The short answer to the honourable gentleman is that I am not aware of any precedent for what the honourable gentleman cheekily suggests."
