The SNP's Westminster leader is set to apply for an emergency debate in the House of Commons later today.

Ian Blackford will make his case for the debate – also known as an SO24 application – during a speech heard by the House of Commons speaker John Bercow.

If Bercow agrees to hold such a debate, one could take place as soon as tomorrow.

The move follows a hectic week for the Tory Government, during which the "meaningful" Brexit vote was delayed and a no-confidence vote was held to determine the Prime Minister's future.

The application also comes after May's return from a key EU summit in Brussels.

Emergency debates are generally only held when there is a matter of urgent consideration to be discussed.

Applications to hold them can only be made from Monday to Thursday while MPs are sitting.

Parliament can also expect to hear from Theresa May this afternoon, who will make a statement to MPs at about 3.30pm in which she will warn against the "irreparable damage" a second Brexit referendum could have on British politics.
