TORY MSP Murdo Fraser has been branded the “class clown” after sharing a newspaper column accusing the First Minister of avoiding top-level meetings with the deputy Prime Minister because she was getting her nails done.

Writing in the Edinburgh Evening News, former Tory MSP Brian Monteith criticised Nicola Sturgeon for not meeting David Lidington last Friday.

The UK Government only offered the SNP leader the meeting the night before Lidington arrived in Scotland, but the First Minister said she “wasn’t prepared to cancel my constituency commitments at such short notice”.

In his column, Monteith described Sturgeon as a “prima donna”, implying she was more interested in fashion than Brexit.

SNP MSP Jenny Gilruth criticised Fraser for sharing the article: “Not for the first time, Murdo Fraser wants to play class clown rather than behave as a grown-up politician.”

She added: “It is completely unacceptable for one of Ruth Davidson’s most senior MSPs to share sentiments reducing women in public life to their nails, shoes and make-up."

A Tory spokesman said: “The SNP should sort its own house out before pointing the finger at others when it comes to use of language.”
