ONE thousand households in Airdrie received a free gift on Saturday in the form of a copy of The National, and the recipients got a money-off voucher for The Sunday National in the bargain.
It was all thanks to an inspired idea by local Yes campaigners Airdrie for Independence (AfI) who suggested to The National that they would be happy to distribute free copies of the paper in an area of their town where The National did not have a big circulation.
As the only daily and Sunday newspaper that supports independence – and still cannot get sold in certain supermarket chains – we are always on the lookout for more sales as well as ways to boost the Yes movement. We are the only newspaper that regularly carries reports and news about Yes groups.
So on Saturday, AfI members went door-to-door in Airdrie and handed out 1000 copies, for which we thank them.
Jim Cassidy of AfI explained: “We went round the doors on Saturday morning rather than set up a street stall, and we noticed that a lot of people were at home so perhaps they read the paper over breakfast.
“We were pleased with the coverage you gave our group on Saturday and we put the sales voucher in the paper next to that so it has probably raised our profile as well.
“I would recommend all Yes groups to try and assist The National in this way and we have already heard from Yes Cumbernauld who are keen to have a go.”
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
Callum Baird, Editor of The National
