Holst and Vaughan Williams: Making Music English, BBC2, 9pm

Radio 3 regular Tom Service co-hosts this new documentary with history professor Amanda Vickery. Their aim is to learn more about the lifelong friendship between Ralph Vaughan Williams and Gustav Holst, the composers whose music is often credited with creating the so-called English Sound, which began to take shape during the early part of the 20th century.

Service and Vickery’s research takes them across the country as they follow in Holst and Vaughan Williams’ footsteps, retracing the trips they made while uncovering the music that inspired them along the way, from the works of Renaissance masters to folk.

And, of course, there’s a chance to hear some of the music they produced, played by the BBC Concert Orchestra.
