BBC Newsnight have apologised to Ian Blackford after claiming Angus Robertson was still the Westminster leader of the SNP.

In a package on Brexit numbers in the Commons, the show used a picture of Robertson’s face to illustrate the SNP’ position.

One SNP supporter took to Twitter to complain directly to presenter Emily Maitlis.

Douglas Campbell said: “Poor show you couldn’t get the SNP Westminster Leader correct. You’re a serious political programme but you don’t know who leads the third largest party in the House of Commons? We’re SO used to this lack of respect and serious interest in Scotland, but please up your game.”

Maitlis replied: “We got this wrong. Apologies to @IanBlackfordMP. This was poor.”

There was, however, no apology from the BBC for journalist Carole Cadwalladr after Andrew Neil described her as a “mad cat woman”.

Cadwalladr writes for the Observer and recently won a major award for her investigations into Brexit, Arron Banks, and Cambridge Analytica.

At 3:15am on Tuesday morning, Neil described Cadwalladr “mad cat woman from Simpson’s, Karol Kodswallop”. The tweet was deleted seven hours later.

Neil, who presents Politics Live and This Week, was criticised by a number of other journalists.

Responding indirectly to Neil on Twitter, Cadwalladr said: “Four days ago, I wrote to @BBC re its role in amplifying @Arron_banks’ harassment campaign against me. I cited Neil’s tweets.

“This isn’t just sexist & unfunny. & it doesn’t just reveal wider failure to report the story. It betrays the British public. Who are not being told the truth.”

A BBC spokesperson said: “Andrew has deleted what he recognises was an inappropriate tweet.”

“This is so very inadequate,” Cadwalladr replied.

Another early morning tweet from the host laid into Primal Scream frontman Bobby Gillespie.

Gillespie’s appearance on an episode This Week last month went viral after he declined to dance with join Neil, Labour MP Caroline Flint and former Tory Minister Michael Portillo dancing.

“You lot dancing with Bobby Gillespie looking on in horror, was one of the TV highlights of the year!” one person tweeted.

Neil replied: “I hope we show it again so somebody can tell who the miserable Jock is and what he’s ever done. Other than scowl and spout Corbynista propaganda from his fancy Islington pad.”
