FIGURES released yesterday reveal motorists in Glasgow have been hit the hardest by bus lane fines in the UK.

Glasgow City Council last year issued the largest number of fines by any council, with 108,735 Glasgow-based motorists charged up to £60 each, totalling £6.5 million.

Councils throughout the UK have raked in £41m in one year as 888,760 motorists faced bus lane charges.

Amanda Stretton, motoring editor at Confused.com, said: “The £41m in fines issued by councils are testimony to the fact that bus lanes are one of the most confusing challenges motorists face on our already chaotic roads.”

Councils argue that bus lanes are clearly marked, but motorists disagree – 48% of motorists who have driven in a bus lane claim to have done so unknowingly due to confusion created by unclear bus signage.

Now 41% of motorists are calling for the cash generated by the fines to be put into making bus signage clearer and reduce confusion.

Stretton added: “It’s only right that some of this fine money is invested to make bus lanes and signage clearer.

“In the meantime, we’ve launched a go-to bus lane guide to help drivers navigate through the chaos and advise how they can challenge a fine if they think it has been unfairly issued.”
