THE joke was on comedy venue chain Glee Club yesterday when leading property consultant CBRE proudly announced that it had secured 7/11 Renfield Street in Glasgow as the first Scottish home of the company.

That no doubt came as a surprise to the Glee Club and the various websites which published the CBRE media release without checking the stories from four weeks ago – for the Glee Club’s new Glasgow home is actually at 7 Renfrew Street.

Like generations of people from Glasgow and elsewhere, somebody somewhere mixed up Renfield and Renfrew streets – the former runs north to south through the city centre and the latter goes west to east. The National wasn’t caught out however and can fully confirm the Glee Club will be at 7 Renfrew Street from the first weekend in February.

Being the helpful people we are, we pointed this out to those making the announcement, and they swiftly put out a correction.

We are indebted to CBRE for the news that the Glee Club is to stay in Renfrew Street for some time – the deal for the 13,000 sq ft property was secured on behalf of the landlord, UK Property Finance Holdings Limited C/O Aberdeen Standard Investments, on a new 15 year lease, at a rental of £100,000 per annum.

An independent chain of live stand-up comedy and music venues, The Glee Club first opened in 1994 in Birmingham’s Chinese Quarter – the first dedicated comedy club to open in the United Kingdom outside London. The chain now has venues in Cardiff, Nottingham and Oxford as well as Glasgow..

Kevin Sims, senior director from CBRE, said: “We are delighted to have advised our client on this deal and that The Glee Club has secured the perfect location to bring comedy right into the heart of Glasgow city centre. We are confident that the club’s newest venue will benefit greatly from the custom of those who work, live and visit the city centre.”

The Glee Club in Glasgow will initially open on Friday and Saturday nights – and that’s not in jest.
