US beer firm Scofflaw claim they have been "thrown under several buses at once" after a rogue press release caused major controversy.

The craft brewer had been set to launch in BrewDog bars across the UK when their agency, Frank PR, issued a statement claiming that the beer would be given away free to Trump supporters.

The backlash was swift, with Brewdog immediately pulling out of the launch and claiming that the promotion went against their core values. A US partner also terminated a contract with the brewer and several US retailers refused to stock their product.

However, Scofflaw claim they never approved the press release, though the damage is already done.

BrewDog stuck with their decision to cancel the launch even after they discovered the press release was false, and Scofflaw say they didn't work to repair the fallout.

Matt Shirah, CEO of Scofflaw, said, “We spent many months and dollars planning our brand launch and events across the UK. I wanted to engage a PR firm but did not know which.

"I took one recommendation, Frank, checked out their client list, and took them on.

“I expect it was naive for me to believe that they would have, or should have, a robust protocol when it comes to releasing messages that can have a global impact on a client's brand, especially given the current political environment.

“So, yes it has been a disappointing experience on many fronts. We have been thrown under several buses at one time. I will resist the urge to offer more commentary at this point, however I expect it will all come out in the wash. I would add one thing however...we do beer, not politics.”

Frank PR confirmed the statement had been released without the approval of Scofflaw’s Atlanta-based boss Matt Shirah, and have suspended the employee responsible while an investigation takes place.

Scofflaw have since hired Media House International to represent their business.
