SOMETHING’S rotten in the state of Paisley … but there’s some confusion over what’s causing the stench.

On Sunday night the town centre was evacuated after emergency services responded to what seemed to be a suspected gas leak.

Police officers, firefighters and paramedics all rushed to the Last Post pub on County Square next to Paisley Gilmour Street station, just after 9pm.

Witnesses told local radio a woman was heard screaming and coughing. Several people were treated as a precaution. ScotRail even cancelled services in and out of the Renfrewshire town.

And then it emerged on social media that the gas leak was in fact caused by a bunch of local youths armed with stink bombs. That was picked up and reported by press.

However, Police Scotland say that isn’t right and that it’s too soon to confirm the cause.

A spokesman for JD Wetherspoon, which runs the Last Post seemed to suggest that the hoo ha was caused by someone letting off tear gas.

Eddie Gershon, spokesman for JD Wetherspoon, told Heart FM:

“At around 8.15pm the pub manager was alerted to a gas substance in the air by a staff member.”

He added: “At around 9.30pm the fire brigade and police arrive and begin to set up a cordon around the entire pub and shut Paisley Gilmour Street train station.

“A wide range of emergency

crews are at the pub by this stage including fire officers getting dressed into full hazmat suits are told later that it was a suspected CS gas being let off.”

Staff were allowed back into the building at about 10.45pm.
