SUNSHINE and the crowds came out for the women’s cycling road race in the European Championships yesterday.

The race, which was broadcast live on the BBC, showed some of Glasgow’s most historic landmarks as the women sped through the streets to cheers from onlookers.

A nail-biting finish saw Italian Marta Bastianelli fly past the leaders of the peloton and win by a considerable margin in 3.28.15.

The three Dutch riders who had been leading were left in her wake although three-time European gold medallist Marianne Vos from the Netherlands managed to secure second place with Germany’s Lisa Brennauer coming in third, less than 24 hours after she won individual pursuit gold on the track.

Britain’s Dani Rowe finished in 10th place. The Commonwealth Games bronze medallist was in the leading pack with two laps to go, alongside Italy’s Elisa Longo Borghini and Dutch Olympic champion Anna van der Breggen.
