AN attempt by the Scottish Conservatives to attack an SNP minister over her tablet recipe backfired massively – after it emerged that one of their own councillors runs a tablet-making business.

Cameron Confections, a Fenwick-based confectionary company that specialises in homemade luxury tablet, is owned by Conservative councillor Alyson Simmons.

When The National asked her to comment, Simmons immediately hung up the phone.

The business is listed on Simmons's member's interests for East Ayrshire council where she represents Ballochmyle.

Tory MSP and Deputy Leader of the party Jackson Carlaw has himself promoted the organisation in the past.

At a previous Scottish Conservatives Conference, Carlaw tweeted: "A plug for Cameron Confections and their tasty tablet available at the #scc14 stalls."

Their website states that they have been in business for over 10 years.

However the Scottish Conservatives put the Scottish treat in the firing line this morning after attacking SNP minister Maree Todd for sharing her recipe.

A Scottish Conservative spokesman earlier said: “Considering her position as the minister for childcare and early years, many parents would rather their children didn’t use a recipe that requires two pounds of sugar.

“It’s clear that when the SNP try to encourage healthy eating it’s do as I say not as I do.”

Todd, who shared her recipe online after making tablet for care experienced children going to summer camp, branded the criticism as “lousy”.

Labour MSP Monica Lennon also tweeted in support of Todd, stating: “Only the @ScotTories could have an adverse reaction to kindness, love and compassion; not ingredients that feature in their policy recipes.”
