SCOTTISH Tory deputy leader Jackson Carlaw is under fire after lodging a "cold-hearted, callous" motion in the Scottish Parliament over Israel's Eurovision win.

Netta Barzilai won Eurovision on Saturday night, and Carlaw's motion, lodged today, congratulates Israel, making mention of it being Israel's "70th Independence Day anniversary".

It comes as Israel faces widespread condemnation over the deaths of around 60 Palestinians yesterday, shot by Israeli soldiers.

Carlaw's motion in the Scottish Parliament said: "That the Parliament sends its hearty congratulations to democratic Israel on its victory in the Eurovision song contest; notes that Netta Barzilai, more commonly referred to as Netta, won with her song, Toy; is aware that Israel previously won in 1978, 1979 and 1998, and believes that this is an extra special win in what is Israel's 70th Independence Day anniversary, with 2019's Eurovision now to be held in Jerusalem."

SNP Friends of Palestine drew attention to the motion and said it compounded disappointment in the Tories, after "hollow words" on the tragedy from Middle East minister Alistair Burt earlier in the day.

Responding to Carlaw's motion, the group said: "In light of yesterday's actions by israel, this is a slap in the face to the 58 souls who perished at the hands of the Israeli military yesterday in Gaza. This is a slap in the face to those who have been dispossessed for 70 years.

"This is the politics of figures such as Trump and Netanyahu who back-slap while state-sanctioned murder is carried out.

"There are no words that can express the anger at this cold-hearted, callous decision by Jackson Carlaw MSP."
