A VOLCANO in southern Japan which appeared in a James Bond film has erupted, shooting grey smoke and ash thousands of feet into the sky.

This is the second major eruption at the Shinmoedake volcano since it exploded in March for the first time since 2011. There was a less powerful eruption in April.

No damage has been reported after yesterday’s eruption.

The volcano was seen in the 1967 James Bond film You Only Live Twice. Entry to the 4,660ft-high Shinmoedake has been restricted since March.

Another nearby volcano, Io, erupted recently for the first time in 250 years.
