DONALD Trump has welcomed home three Americans freed by North Korea and declared their release a sign of promise towards denuclearising the Korean Peninsula.
Speaking on Thursday at the Joint Base Andrews, near Washington, the president called it a “great honour” to welcome the men to the US, but said “the true honour is going to be if we have a victory in getting rid of nuclear weapons”.
Trump thanked Kim Jong Un and said he believes a de-nuclearisation deal could be made at an upcoming summit, which Trump announced will take place in Singapore on June 12.
“I really think he wants to do something,” Trump said.
The president later tweeted: “We will both try to make it a very special moment for World Peace!”
Kim Dong Chul, Kim Hak Song and Tony Kim, who had been released on Wednesday, appeared tired but in excellent spirits, flashing peace signs and waving their arms as they emerged from the aircraft.
When asked how it felt to be home, one of the men said: “It’s like a dream; we are very, very happy.”
