TELEVISION star Carol Smillie has become a Humanist celebrant, allowing her to conduct funerals and naming ceremonies.

The broadcaster said she was “delighted” to be one of seven new celebrants joining the Humanist Society Scotland. The former Changing Rooms presenter conducted her first Humanist funeral on Wednesday after passing the first part of her training.

She is not currently authorised to deliver legal Humanist weddings, although most celebrants do progress to that stage after gaining more experience.

The Wheel of Fortune star, who will conduct ceremonies under her married name of Carol Knight, said: “I have already found the experience of delivering the first funeral a real privilege in supporting the family involved. For me, Humanist values of care, compassion and kindness are really important.”
