HUNDREDS of independence supporters are expected to gather in the historic Aberdeenshire town of Ellon later this month for the Yes2 Freedom Convoy rally where the star of the show will be former First Minister Alex Salmond.
The convoy is being held in the town where the former first minister has his Gordon constituency office and he has promised that everyone who attends the event in Gordon Park on Sunday, February 19 from 12-4pm will be “greeted with a warm north-east welcome”.
As well as backing the big event, The National’s editor Callum Baird and our reporting team will be bringing our hugely successful roadshow to the park to meet our loyal family of readers and hand out free newspapers.

Not surprisingly, Salmond will be the lead speaker at the convoy and rally, followed by Chris Graham of Yes Bikers, Alex Bell of Labour for Independence, and Yes2 co-founders Tony McCandless and John McHarg.
Salmond said: “I am very much looking forward to welcoming the convoy to Ellon and the Gordon constituency, where they will be greeted with a warm north-east welcome. With food, speeches, music and even the promise of a rally dance, it is sure to be a fun day for all the family and people of all ages. So let’s hope the weather holds out and we get as many people joining the convoy as we can.”
Yes2, the organisers of the event, said they were “delighted” Salmond had agreed to be involved in their big day.
Food will be available from the Alba Shack Smokehouse, while Ted Christopher and Amanda Brown will provide the entertainment. McHarg said: “The point of the day is to stress that the real guardians of progress are not the politicians at Westminster, or even at Holyrood, but the energised activism of tens of thousands of people who I predict will refuse to go back meekly into the political shadows.”
