THERE were red faces at a local council after a missing accent on a sign welcoming visitors to Rothesay, the “Gateway to Beautiful Bute” raised some eyebrows in the Gaelic community.

An eagle-eyed National reader pointed out that the last word of the Gaelic phrase “An doras gu bòidhchead Eilan Bhoid” was missing an accent above the letter “o”, which rendered its translation as: “The doorway to the beauty of Penis Island.”

The cock-up was also relayed to Argyll and Bute Council, which quickly sorted it out and, in short statement yesterday, said: “It appears to have been an error in the production of the sign. This has now been rectified and an accent/grav added.”
