MULTI-INSTRUMENTALISTS Mairearad and Anna (Mairearad Green, accordion and pipes) and Anna Massie (banjo, fiddle and guitar) return at the end of August with a new album inspired by the sea.

Farran, which takes its name from the old Scots word for starboard, is the duo’s fourth album and is designed to provide the listener with something akin to the pair’s live performances.

The stripped-back vocals, guitar, accordion, fiddle and bagpipes were recorded live at Glasgow’s Gloworm studio and co-produced by Calum MacCrimmon from Breabach.

Given that Green grew up by Achnahaird Bay in Wester Ross and has now returned north to settle in Ullapool, while Massie is from Fortrose on the Moray Firth, it is unsurprising that the latest work should be a maritime celebration.

“Moving back up north and living by the sea in Ullapool definitely slows you down,” says Green.

“This has allowed us more time to discover some fantastic local tunes that we are delighted to include on this album.”

Farran is released on August 31 on Shouty Records. The duo will be touring the UK in November
