THE World Indoor Championships. Coverage of the evening session on the second day of the competition, which takes place at Arena Birmingham. The women’s 60m will come to a conclusion tonight with the running of both the semi-finals and final, and there will also be finals staged in the men’s long jump and women’s shot put, while the women’s pentathlon will conclude with the long jump and 800m. Other notable events on the timetable are the opening round of the men’s 800m and women’s 1500m, in addition to the semi-finals of the women’s and men’s 400m.

Tones, Drones and Arpeggios: The Magic of Minimalism, BBC 4, 9pm

MUSICIAN and conductor Charles Hazlewood goes in search of minimalism, classical music’s last great “movement”, which began on America’s West Coast in the 1950s. Tracking down the pioneers of the genre, Charles explores La Monte Young’s groundbreaking experiments with musical form that included notes held for exceptionally long periods, and drones inspired by Eastern classical music and Hindustani singer Pandit Pran Nath. Charles visits the Californian ranch of Terry Riley, and discusses the musician’s revolutionary experiments with tape recording looping and phasing, along with early synthesizer sound.

RIGGS and Murtaugh investigate a murder inside a hospital of a prominent figure from the mob. Their main suspect is a doctor who supposedly died five years earlier, but who it now seems may have been in hiding since faking his demise.

The Yorkshire Steam Railway: All Aboard, Channel 5, 8pm

DEEP in the Yorkshire Moors is a train line that time forgot. It all began when six Yorkshiremen decided they would try and bring the 1830s North Yorkshire Moors Railway back to life. Fifty years later and visitor numbers have never been higher, as the steam trains travel across the Yorkshire countryside. This new three-part series goes behind the scenes, and begins as star engine Royal Scot is hired to headline for a week. General manager Chris thinks it’s an expensive gamble as they won’t know if she will actually fit the tracks.
