Grandpa’s Great Escape (BBC One, 6.55pm)

It’s now almost traditional for an adaptation of a children’s book by David Walliams to pop up over the festive season. In the latest to make it to the small screen, Tom Courtenay takes the lead role of Grandpa, a Second World War flying ace who must move into old people’s home Twilight Towers when his Alzheimer’s becomes too difficult for his family to cope with full-time. Miss Dandy runs the establishment, but it’s clear she isn’t exactly a kindly soul, so it’s up to Grandpa and his grandson Jack to plot an escape that may also bring the old man face-to-face with his beloved Spitfire.

McMafia (BBC One, 9pm)

If you’re feeling a little delicate after the shenanigans of the night before, brace yourself because you’re about to be taken on a rollercoaster ride. James Norton takes the lead as Alex Godman, a successful businessman with a difficult upbringing. He’s the son of Russian exiles whose families were embroiled in organised crime. Although Alex has distanced himself from that murky situation, the past is about to catch up.
