THE debate in Holyrood on Wednesday revealed that there are no limits to the depths that can be plumbed by the Unionist parties in their bid to sabotage the Scottish Government.

An initial independent inquiry into the problems at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital published its report 18 months ago, with almost all of its recommendations now implemented; for the last year the health board has been following an agreed recovery plan under the supervision of a Stage 4 management team reporting to the CEO of NHS Scotland while the government is waiting on the findings of a comprehensive judge-led inquiry.

As the outcome of the debate was never in doubt, what were the opposition’s objectives? There was nothing that could be gained from debating a motion that did not contain any proposals for actions that would make an immediate improvement in the services provided by the hospital. The opposition’s contributions to the debate only served to undermine the confidence of every patient admitted to the largest hospital in Scotland.
