THEY are sales assistants, therapists, musicians and more – and all want independence.

Meet the ordinary Scots starring in Portraits of a Nation, the photography project that aims to capture the breadth of the country’s Yes movement.

They include student Lloyd Melville, who wants to reject austerity and nuclear weapons, and staff nurse Joyce Fairley, who wants to build a better nation for her grandchildren.

There’s also retiree Ian Bain, who credits the Yes campaign with giving him purpose after being diagnosed with degenerative motor neurone disease in 2014.

Their images and stories have been captured by Sandie Knudsen and David Ho, the professional photographer couple snapping the people driving political change one head shot at a time.

Operating under the name YYes Scotland – pronounced “Why, Yes” – the pair aim to include 700 people from all walks of life in the portrait series, and are currently 10% of the way through.

Sandie, who operates from Rosyth, told the Sunday National: “The folk we meet through this are fascinating. They all have their own stories and their own reasons for wanting independence. I love it.”
