THE White House was left red-faced in a Twitter gaffe that claimed Scotland is not part of the UK.

In a now-deleted tweet, the US President’s official residence claimed he was "departing the UK" after meeting with the Queen.

In fact, Trump has gone to Scotland, where he’ll spend the weekend playing golf at his Turnberry resort in Ayrshire.

The National:

While we hope Scotland will one day become an independent country, that is sadly not the case yet.

The tweet has since been deleted from the account, presumably after the error was discovered by staffers.

Social media users were quick to point out the mistake, with one arguing that now is the time for Scotland to leave the UK.

And this is just one of the cases in which the White House has embarrassed itself on the president's UK visit.

In an interview with the Sun yesterday Trump said that May’s published plan for Brexit would “kill” any hopes of a new trade deal with the US.

The National:

Hours after the interview, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders attempted to repair some of the damage, releasing a statement that insisted Trump “likes and respects Mrs May very much,” adding: “He thought she was great on Nato today and is a really terrific person.”

Thousands of people are expected in Edinburgh today for a Carnival of Resistance in the Meadows area of the city.

Trump also faced a protest as he arrived at the Turberry golf course this morning when a paraglider – apparently from Greenpeace – circled the grounds with a banner that read "Trump Well Below Par".
