BRITAIN’S triumphant Davis Cup team are among the contenders for Team of the Year in this year’s Laureus sports awards.

The award would further cement the achievement of Scotland’s Murray brothers and their-team mates in getting the UK’s first win in the event for 79 years as one of the all-time great performances.

Lewis Hamilton has been nominated for the Laureus Sportsman of the Year Award after winning his second consecutive Formula One title.

Mercedes driver Hamilton, 31, is among six British nominees for the prestigious awards, with Jessica Ennis-Hill up for Comeback of the Year. Boxer Tyson Fury and swimmer Adam Peaty have been nominated in the Breakthrough of the Year category, while Racing cyclist Rachel Atherton has been shortlisted for Action Sportsperson of the Year.

Hamilton, a past winner, will go up against Usain Bolt, Lionel Messi, Novak Djokovic, Jordan Spieth and basketball’s Stephen Curry for the Sportsman of the Year title. Ennis-Hill, who won heptathlon gold at the world championships in Beijing on her return to the sport, added: “To come back from having my son and win a gold medal at the World Championships in Beijing exceeded all my expectations.

“It was probably the toughest year of training I have had with so many injuries and physical changes to deal with along the way. My coach and medical team did an amazing job in getting me ready to tackle the heptathlon 13 months after Reggie was born – I still find it hard to believe I won.” The awards ceremony will be held in Berlin on April 18.
