ALL three Scots involved in finals at the World Championships in Aiguebelette, France, yesterday came away with medals while Olympic champion Katherine Grainger qualified for tomorrow’s double sculls final.
Kirriemuir’s Sam Scrimgeour and partner Joel Cassells led the lightweight pairs from the first stroke and crossed the line almost three seconds ahead of fast-finishing France.
The new world champion said: “It hasn’t quite sunk in yet, but it feels pretty special. I don’t think we went out super hard, we just went off at a pretty honest pace.”
Edinburgh’s Helen Bennett was in the Great Britain women’s four that won silver behind USA. The Americans took an early lead which the British quartet could not pull back but they finished well ahead of bronze medallists China.
Bennett said: “Unfortunately the Americans were the better crew – but a world medal is amazing, I’m really pleased with that.”
There was another silver in lightweight single sculls when Inverness’s Imogen Walsh just failed to catch New Zealand’s Zoe McBride with a powerful push from fourth place at halfway.
Walsh said: “I really wanted to win but a silver medal at the World Championships against brilliant opposition is pretty good.”
