ROTHERHAM have confirmed the appointment of Alan Stubbs as their new manager after he was forced to resign at Hibernian.

News broke on Tuesday night that Stubbs had agreed to turn his back on Hibs despite having a year left to run on his contract, but the announcement was delayed after negotiations over compensation dragged on for almost 24 hours.

And after a package could not be agreed between the two clubs, Stubbs and his assistant John Doolan were forced to quit their positions to force the move through.

Stubbs took the Edinburgh club to a first trophy in 114 years less than a fortnight ago as they beat Rangers in the Scottish Cup final, but he has been tempted south of the border after brief talks with the Millers.

Hibs initially rejected Rotherham’s advances last week but – after meeting with their manager on Monday – “reluctantly” allowed him to open discussions before further digging their heels in over compensation.

A club statement said: “Rotherham United are delighted to confirm the appointment of Alan Stubbs and John Doolan.”

John Hughes and Stuart McCall are potential replacements at Hibs.
