Jim Goodwin has warned his Dundee United players "there's still work to do" despite knowing a victory over Ayr United would steer them ever-closer to an immediate return to the Scottish Premiership.

Around 10,000 home supporters are expected to attend the clash at Tannadice on Saturday, as one more victory can help them secure the Championship title.

Goodwin, who hasn't gone through the campaign without receiving some criticism from some fans, has been delighted with Dundee United's recent three-game winning run and is desperate for his side to be crowned league winners "in style" against Scott Brown's, Ayr.

"We have put ourselves in a really good position," he said. "We've had a great weeks training, we have not been complacent, there's nobody taking their eye off the ball.

"We are not taking anything for granted and just trying to keep the high standards, and hopefully that will reflect on the performances tomorrow (Saturday 19)."

"The message has been nothing is done yet," the Irishman continued.

"Nothing is confirmed, so whatever is being said in the press or whatever is being said online by different sets of supporters, as a group we have tried to remind ourselves that there is still a job to be done.

"We want to try and win the league, and we want to try and win it in style. We want to continue the good performances that we have shown in recent weeks.

"Defensively, we've been solid. We've been scoring plenty of goals, and we are expecting a big turn out here tomorrow.

"Lots of Dundee United supporters coming along to watch their team and we want to entertain them as well.

"So, it all sets up for a great weekend, but the onus is on us to make sure that we get the job done."

On what it would mean for Dundee United to return back into the top-flight, Goodwin stated: "We are obviously a massive club with a great history. It's a club with facilities and infrastructure, and supporters, that as far as I'm concerned, should be in the Premier League.

"Last season was an extremely disappointing one for everybody connected to the club, and this season we've worked hard in the summer, obviously we've had to balance the books and there's been a lot of big players who had to leave.

"We have had to build a squad that's competitive for the Championship and we've out ourselves in a great position at this moment in time.

"Sitting top of the table, with a bit of a gap between us and second place, with only a few games left to play.

"We are on track to achieve what that main objective was at the start of the campaign but as I said the message has always been to the group that nothing is done yet and we have to make sure that we don't take our eye off the ball."
