SNP MP Tommy Sheppard may have been forced off a House of Commons committee because of the Government’s new rules on English votes for English law.

Sheppard was to be part of a committee scrutinising the Government’s proposed fracking regulations.

Now, because of the vote on Thursday night, the Edinburgh East MP is seeking clarity on whether he can still sit on the committee.

The MP, a long-term opponent of fracking, is concerned that even though the legislation may be English-only, its effect will be to let the UK Government overturn Scotland’s fracking moratorium, Sheppard claims.

He said: “My intention is to go to the meeting on Tuesday, and seek clarification from the chair.”
