THE Labour Party came under pressure to account for promises made by Gordon Brown last week, that Labour would spend £1 million within 24 hours of becoming the Government to help Scotland’s foodbanks with stock.

Last week The National asked who was paying for the policy as it did not appear in the Scottish Labour or UK Labour manifesto. The party did not respond to our question.

Another newspaper has discovered that the money was supposed to come from the Scotland Office. However, the Scotland Office only has a hospitality budget. Any money that would come from UK Government would have to go to the Scottish Government and not directly to foodbanks. It would also not happen within 24 hours.

Gordon Brown is expected to make a substantial speech at the University of Glasgow tomorrow when he receives an honorary doctorate. Sources tell The National that he believes this will be similar to his late interventions during the referendum. It is not known if he will be announcing any policy.
