SNP MP Tommy Sheppard has written to Home Secretary Amber Rudd asking for confirmation that the Home Office has stopped deporting homeless EU Citizens.

He has also asked for figures on how many people were returned to their home nation as a result of the controversial policy.

In his letter, Sheppard points out that when he asked parliamentary questions last November, the Home Office was unable to provide these statistics. Since then, the practice has been deemed discriminatory by the High Court.

The Edinburgh East MP wants reassurances that deportations will not resume after Brexit.

Sheppard said: “The UK Government carried out this policy despite it contravening EU law. Instead of seeking to reduce the number of people living rough on our streets by scrapping its attack on the welfare system and providing the help vulnerable people need – it has simply targeted migrants through deportation.

“It’s deeply worrying that the Home Office is not able to provide statistics on how many people were affected by the policy.

“I can only assume that they had no interest in knowing what happened to these vulnerable individuals once deported.

“This wasn’t just happening in London but in cities across our country, including Edinburgh.

“I am seeking to ensure that not only has the policy stopped for now, but that they don’t plan anything similar after Brexit.”
