MEMBERS of the Scottish Resistance briefly occupied the Spanish Consulate in Edinburgh yesterday, to protest Madrid’s efforts to scupper the referendum in Catalonia.

The militant pro-Scots independence group made their way inside the building on Castle Street, into what seemed to be a waiting room, where they unfurled a banner.

As bemused members of consulate staff looked on Sean Clerkin from the Resistance, delivered a speech.

“Where is the democracy?” he asked.

“I say Westminster have kept their mouths shut, and all the governments across Europe have kept their mouths shut. Democracy only suits them when it suits them.

“We say Catalonia has to be a free indepedent nation.”

The group left the building after eight minutes.

Police arrived soon after and said staff at the Consulate had accused the Resistance of “bursting” through the door to get into the building.

“We didn’t burst down the door, we opened the door and went in,” a puzzled Clerkin told the PC.

The group are known for their high profile stunts.

Last year they protested outside the Tunnock’s factory in Uddingston after the biscuit firm reportedly made plans to make the wrappers less Scottish.
