JEREMY Corbyn claims Scottish Labour are on their way up, and has predicted the party will win more seats north of the border at the next general election, whenever that may be.

Labour won seven Scottish seats in last week’s election, six more than in 2015, though 33 less than in 2010.

But many of the SNP MPs who did make it back had incredibly small majorities — 10 with less than a thousand.

As he welcomed the new Scots to Westminster, Corbyn said they would “soon be joined by a lot more”.

He added: “Scotland has elected Labour MPs in good numbers and has voted Labour in good numbers and I am very enthusiastic and very optimistic about the future.

“Our campaigning hasn’t stopped, it carries on and as soon as this government finally recognises that it cannot govern then there will be another election and we will be back in bigger numbers still.”

One of those MPs posing for photos was Ian Murray, the Edinburgh South MP who just months ago had accused Corbyn of “destroying the party”.

Though bygones appeared to be bygones as the group posed for pictures on the Commons Terrace.

Corbyn has still to announce his new shadow cabinet, so it is not yet known who will be shadow Scottish secretary.
