VANDALS have daubed graffiti on a war memorial at the Bannockburn visitor centre.

One of the walls of the Rotunda at the Battle of the Bannockburn Experience had the phrase “everyone’s different” painted in green and red.

Centres boss Scott McMaster told STV that the war memorial was not an appropriate place to “express yourself”.

He said: “Someone has spray-painted the message on the back one of the Rotunda walls.

“We are really disappointed. This is the first time it has been vandalised in at least a decade.”

He added: “We don’t want to encourage people to put political messages or slogans on a war memorial. People have to treat these sites with respect. It is just not appropriate.

“We won’t tolerate this sort of thing and we are working with the police.”

McMaster added they would have the graffiti removed before this weekend’s doors open day: “We are looking forward to the weekend’s events where we are going to have living historians and for the first time letting people try archery.

“The event will help us raise money for the upkeep of the memorial and centre.”

Police are appealing for information. The vandal is thought to have struck sometime between 6pm on Sunday, and 10am on Monday.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Enquiries are ongoing and we are keen to hear from anyone who can provide information regarding this incident.”

Local Tory MSP Liz Smith tweeted: “Despicable behaviour that has led to graffiti on Bannockburn memorial.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 or anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
